Deli v. University of Minnesota
United States District Court for the District of Minnesota
863 F. Supp. 958 (1994)
- Written by Brianna Pine, JD
Facts
Katalin Deli (plaintiff) served as head coach of the University of Minnesota (university) (defendant) women’s gymnastics team until June 1992, when the university terminated her employment. Deli sued the university under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Equal Pay Act (EPA), and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Deli did not contest the legality of her termination. Instead, she alleged that the university improperly paid her less than the head coaches of several men’s teams, including football, hockey, and basketball. According to Deli, the disparity resulted from the gender of the athletes she coached. Deli did not allege that the university discriminated against her because she was a woman. While the men’s-team coaches did receive higher salaries, their positions involved different responsibilities than Deli had as the coach of the women’s gymnastics team: the men’s teams were larger, their coaches supervised more employees and managed greater public- and media-relations duties, and the teams attracted more spectators and generated more revenue. The university moved for summary judgment.
